B.Sc Anatomy Students Defend their Dissertations

Four B.Sc. Anatomy students defended their dissertions. Ms. Beth Githamboh presented on Histoarchitecture of the adrenal cortex of the laboratory rat following repeated exposure to mifepristone. Her supervisions were Dr. Anne Pulei, Dr. Moses Obimbo, Prof. Hassan Saidi. The study was based on the premise of increased use of mifeprestone (RU486) as a contraceptive, and to control uterine leiomyomas. However, the effect of mifepristone on the ACTH axis is unknown. Its final effect on the adrenal structure is equally unknown. Thirty animals were used in her study. These animals were divided in three groups. The drug was administered to animals in the test group. Rat adrenal cortex was comparable to human. The thickness of the adrenal cortex in its three layers showed changes related to drug administration. 

Mr. Amir Mumin presented on  Age and sex differences in the morphology of the left arterial appendage. His supervisors were Dr. Beda Olabu, Dr. Wycliff Kaisha, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o. His study was developed in the back ground of the known left atrial appendage morphological variations, which can influence the development of thromboembolic phenomena. The anatomical basis of development of the thromboembolic phenomena may be in the structure of the atrial appendage. He studied eighty-eight human hearts. Windsock morphology was the most common, while cactus morphology was the least common. 

Mr. Chadwick Ochieng’ presented on Structural changes in the epididymal epithelium of the laboratory rat following prolonged exposure to noise stress. His supervisors were Dr. Benard Ndung’u, Dr. Pamela Mandela, Prof. Peter Gichangi. As a background, there is increased male related infertility that is related to noise. After studying the rat model, 90 decibel noise caused a reduction in the thickness of the epididymis epithelium in the control group

Ms. Faith Aseta presented on Structural changes in the cornea of the rat following monocular eyelid closure. Her supervisors included Dr. Odula, Dr. Maseghe, Prof. Malek.  Eyelid closure deprives the eye of light and oxygen. Leading to corneal edema. The structural changes accompanying the edema is unknown. Prolonged eyelid closure caused histological changes in the cornea. The faculty and external examiners were impressed by the quality of their presentations.
