Prof. Ruth Nduati a pediatrician and researcher at the University of Nairobi presented to the department a talk on the opportunities for clinical research. She highlighted the different levels of the research continuum, namely; Discovery; development, delivery and improved health outcomes.

She emphasized on the need of organizational framework for research, collaboration and focus on local problem.

The broken link between clinical and basic science departments, lack of a master plan on development of biomedical research capacity, working on investigator driven research without supporting infrastructure, teaching medical workers with minimal grounding on research and over reliance on the PhD tract were noted impediments of research in African universities.

As a university we may need to identify clear research themes, establish research/training clusters and strong linkages between clinical, public health and basic science departments. Additionally, a coherent approach to research ought to be developed. This will include research clustering, research training.

The moderator of the session was Prof. Peter Gichangi. In attendance were faculty members, B.Sc. Anatomy students, M.Sc. Science Anatomy students and M.Med Surgery part I students.
