Department of Human Anatomy & Physiology Infrastructure

The department teaches over 700 students in 8 undergraduate and 9 postgraduate programs. It has, despite enormous challenges, retained the traditional dissection mode of instruction and blended it with 'newer teaching methods. The department is focused on transformative research themes from animal and fossil-based to patients, autopsy, and cadaver material and restored active publication in applied anatomy and diverse clinical fields.

The department of human anatomy of the University of Nairobi was started in 1967 with 35 students and 3 members of teaching staff. Teaching laboratories, lecture theatres and offices were completed and opened on March 4, 1968. The first complement of staff was joined by others mainly as the WHO aid to Kenya. From this humble beginning, the department now 45 years old teaches over 700 students distributed in 8 undergraduate and 9 postgraduate programs. It has, despite enormous challenges, retained the traditional dissection mode of instruction and blended it with ‘newer’ teaching methods. There are currently 17 members of the teaching staff assisted by over 10 part-time demonstrators and 15 technologists. In recent times, we have transformed research themes from animal and fossil based to patients, autopsy and cadaver material and restored active publication in applied anatomy and diverse clinical fields. This is happening at a time when most human anatomy departments are suffering major declines in time allocation, staffing levels and research output.

THE NAIROBI SURGICAL SKILLS CENTRE (NSSC)

THE NAIROBI SURGICAL SKILLS CENTRE (NSSC); REGIONAL SIMULATION SURGICAL TRAINING CENTRE. Dr. Bernard M. Ndung’u; Fell. Endoscopic GI/Hernia Surg. (Apollo), Dip. MAS (WALS-Delhi), MMED (Surg.), MBChB, BSc (Anat) (UoN); Consultant Laparoscopic (Digestive & Hernia) Surgeon, School of Medicine, University of Nairobi; and Faculty Trainer in Laparoscopic Surgical Skills at the NSSC Surgical skills acquisition undergoes the triple phase of cognitive, integrative and autonomous stages like all motor skills. The conventional Halstedean appretenschip concept of teaching of surgical skills is currently strongly challenged by various factors such as new and emerging techniques, greater focus on surgeons competence vis a vis the concerns of the patients safety, rising costs of theatres and a universal decline in the number of preceptors. Based on the well-established simulation training in aviation, industry, military and entertainment, surgical skills simulation is the most prominent innovation in medical education over the past 15 years. It is supported with a simulation journal, an academic society on simulation, simulation equipment, and simulation based educational programs. In the East and Central Africa region, the Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre is the only structured facility offering skills training to medical professionals of all levels of competence. Established in 2012, the NSSC has the state of the art facilities and equipment, flexible administrative staff who have developed superb courses in all medical fields, which are conducted by highly trained local and international faculty, who are opinion leaders in their respective specialties. The centre has provided specialized training for 1168 professionals from foundation doctors to consultants and senior surgeons since inception and has lined up fabulous courses in future. The NSSC is therefore at the forefront of boosting the skills of surgeons and allied medical professionals in the region and ensuring their quality of the future.
